Aural Wes: Harlem Takes On Obamarama

Kind of a funny article, that was written before the Wesleyan show.

Notherground Music boasts the musical collaboration of 6th sense, Wildabeast, and Jelani who aspire to make music that is not underground and is not mainstream, so I suppose that just leaves rudimentary. Nonetheless, this collective hip hop, soul, and experimental troop of classically trained musicians turned New York hip hop swagger kids, lays down some sick beats.

6th Sense claims to produce ‘some hipster shit’ with his hipster drum set, despite his Harlem vibe that combines powerful democratic messages with catchy beats that keep people following along. Ignite the People like Obama embodies 6th sense’s proactive approach to activism, art, and hip hop that fits the current events of the return of the liberals. YES WE CAN listen to this over and over again, it’s that good.

The rawkus tracks of  Wildabeast, the self-proclaimed hood hippie, contain electronic riffs similar to Ratatat, but with that ever so lovable passionate hip hop soul that sparks passion and imagination. Order your dreadlock rolling kit and dip yo hip along with Wildabeast who gives a new meaning to the mash-up sound of electronic versus hip hop.

Jelani the MC picked up his mic when haters mocked, “Wait, YOU can rap?” Similar to the soulful raps of Common and the classically trained attention to detail of Andre 3000, Jelani brings hip hop back to the smoother, calming roots through intricate raps with a velvety flow.

Def Thought Exclusive Interview: 6th Sense

I got the chance to catch up with 6th Sense, the rapper/producer whose career is blowing up like nitro right now thanks to his dope production and unique style. Check it...

DT: So for those readers on the site who aren't fully acquainted with you and your work, could you give us a quick introduction?

What up it's 6th Sense, repping Notherground Music. I'm a musician, I MC, I produce. I do a lot. I make splendid music, trust me.

DT: How did you come up with the name 6th Sense?

I came up with the name before the Bruce Willis movie came out. Music is my 6th Sense. I've really grown into the name, I don't think it's based in falsehood.

DT: Did you start producing or rapping first and who were some of your major influences?

I guess I'd say I started rapping first. I loved Biggie. When Eminem came on the scene it was real big for me. At this point I'd say my biggest inspirations are Kanye West, J Dilla, and Stevie Wonder. In a lot of regard you can consider all 3 of them MC/Producers. Everyone influences me though, but those are my three biggest inspirations.

DT: I heard that flip of the Entourage theme on your myspace, shits dope man, are you a big Entourage fan?

Yeah, I've seen every episode. I like how they closed this season out.

DT: Do you have a problem with bloggers offering the original samplesfor hip hop albums online? I know some producers are against it because some of the samples they use aren't cleared.

Eh, no comment. Super catch 22. Thankfully, I don't really rely on sampling when I produce. I'd say about 85% of my productions is sample free.

DT: If you could make a track for any artist you wanted who would it be?

Wow. Really tough to say. I will say though that in 2009 I will be producing for some big artists that will be a dream come true. I will say though, that there's one artist that compared to other big artists, I feel no matter what we'd make something spectacular. With some of the other big artists, there might be some pressure in the air, but I feel like without a doubt me and Andre 3000 would knock something out the park.

DT: What was your favorite album of '08?

I had a few. Q-Tip's "The Renassaince", I really liked Nas' album. Freebass 808's shit was dope, I don't know if people really heard that yet. Jelani's "Wait, You Can Rap?!?!" Wildahead Portibeast. Raphael Saddiq's album was real good.

DT: Final question, got any projects in '09 that we should look out for? Any closing words?

Shouts to everyone. Thanks to all for the support. Just keep your eyes and ears open. Check out notherground.blogspot.com for the daily goodness. The 6th Sense & Wildabeast are... Both Nice album is dropping finally top of the year. Look for me to be contributing a bulk of production to both Outasight and The Kid Daytona's respective albums. I got a lot more coming. A whole lot more.

Wildahead Portibeast - DEEPGOA's Electronic Sessions (Review)

Even after all this time... it's classic folks, just understand that.

REVIEW:
by Marvin
Anyone who has explored the electronic music albums on Free Albums Galore probably noticed I have a fondness for Trip-Hop. So it is interesting that my trip-hop preference doesn’t transfer to the most popular artists in the genre, Portishead. As much as I swoon over the vocals of Beth Gibbons, the over-all feel of Portishead’s efforts is antiseptic. Lots of atmosphere but little emotion.
So the unusual free and legal online experiment by hip-hop wonder Wildabeast titled Wildahead Portibeast is a bit of a revelation. Wildabeast takes the music of Portishead and turns it into a hip-hop smorgasbord of beats and rap lyrics. The tracks are re-mixed so the basic Portishead songs are transformed into trip-hop with soul. Perhaps the best example is “It’s True” which Wildabeast takes the popular “Sour Times”, keeps Gibbon’’s signature line “Nobody loves me, it’s true”, and wraps it in enough electronic and turntable effects to make it his own. In fact, Wildbeast’s rapping is a nice counter-point to Gibbons’ sexy vocals and often leads the listener into the emotional payoff I missed from the original tracks. Wildabeast’s own rap lyrics on tracks like “All for Nothing” and “Machine Gun” remains high quality. I think most Portishead fans will admire these remixes and hip-hop fans will appreciate the journey into new territories.

Hits From The Blog - 15 Artists to Shine in '09

Taken from HERE:
I shine, you shine..
Everybody on this list was grinding all throughout last year. You wanna talk hungry? These talented artists are starving like Mary Kate Olsen to make their mark, so 2009 will be their time to shine. Here are 15 up-and-comers that need to be on your rap radar ASAP.

Big Apple producer and rapper 6th Sense was all over hip-hop this year, from creating the Obama anthem "Ignite The People" to providing beats for Mick Boogie & Terry Urban's remixtapes Viva La Hova and 1988. As he started the new year off with "2-0-0-9," a reinterpretation of Common and Sadat X's "1999" featuring The Kid Daytona, Outasight, and Harlem's Cash, fans should expect big things this year from the multi-talented 6th.
